When to Fly Fish in the Dolomites

Jul 23, 2025

Fly fishing in the Dolomites is as much about timing as it is about location. These stunning alpine valleys, rivers, and lakes shift dramatically with the seasons — not just in landscape, but also in fish behavior, water levels, and accessibility.

So, when is the best time to fly fish in the Dolomites? The general fishing season runs from late March to late September, with some areas extending into October for catch-and-release only. But depending on what you’re looking for — fast action, dry fly opportunities, or the chance to land a trophy trout — different months and areas shine in different ways.

Here’s a breakdown by season.

Spring (Late March – May): Perfect for marble trout

As the snow starts to melt and rivers swell, spring fishing in the Dolomites can be exciting but challenging. Water levels are often high and cold, especially in April, but they begin to stabilize by mid-May.

  • Where to go: Try lower elevation rivers. These waters warm up faster and become fishable earlier.

  • What to expect: Fish are hungry after winter and respond well to streamers and weighted nymphs. Dry fly action is limited early on but begins to pick up by mid-May.

Early Summer (June – Early July): Prime Time in the Valleys

As water levels drop and insects start hatching in force, June and early July are considered peak fly fishing months in the Dolomites. Rivers run clear, fish are active, and access becomes easier.

  • Where to go: Almost everywhere is fishing well.

  • What to expect: Expect good dry fly action on brown trout and rainbow trout, especially in the evening. In the Piave and Sarca, grayling and marble trout are also active.

Mid to Late Summer (Mid July – August): Head Upstream

During the height of summer, some lower rivers can run low and warm — especially in drought years. That’s the time to go high.

  • Where to go: Focus on alpine streams and lakes

  • What to expect: Brook trout and alpine char rise to terrestrials like ants and beetles. Morning and evening are best, especially during heatwaves.

Early Fall (September – Mid October): For Fewer People and Bigger Fish

As the tourist season winds down, September brings stable weather, cool water, and fewer anglers. It’s the perfect month for large trout and grayling.

  • Where to go: Return to the lower elevation rivers — water levels are perfect and the fish are aggressive. Catch-and-release zones often stay open into October.

  • What to expect: Big browns and marmorata feed heavily before winter. Grayling rise to small dry flies. Streamers are effective in deeper pools.

In summary, the best time to fly fish in the Dolomites depends on altitude, weather, and your goals. But with the right timing and a bit of local knowledge, you’ll find something magical in every season — and every cast.
