WHEN TO GO

The fly fishing season in Italy

The Italian season runs from March to October, with exact dates varying by region and river. Alpine creeks in the Dolomites fish beautifully through the warm months, while lowland spring creeks like the Nera stay productive well into autumn. Aim for May, June, or September for ideal water levels and rising fish.

Season closed

More challenging: in mid-summer (Jul–Aug) warmer water and lower flows make the lowland and spring-creek fishing harder, but the high-altitude Dolomite and Alpine creeks stay cool and productive. Most rivers close from November.

About fly fishing in Italy

Italy has long been overlooked as a fly fishing destination. That's changing and anglers who discovered it early know why.

Within 1,200 km of territory, Italy offers an extraordinary range of environments: tiny alpine creeks in the Dolomites, technical spring creeks in Umbria, wild Apennine rivers near Naples, and sea bass on the Adriatic and Ligurian coasts. Few countries in the world let you fish marble trout in the morning and eat in a Michelin-starred restaurant in the evening.

The fishing pressure is low. The landscapes are extraordinary. And the locals who guide these waters have spent their entire lives on them.

The species you can catch

Italy's rivers hold wild brown trout, rainbow trout, marble trout, and grayling. The marble trout — native to the Soča basin and a handful of northern Italian rivers — is the species that draws serious anglers from around the world. Large, wild, and technically demanding, it's unlike anything most American anglers have encountered. Beyond trout, Italy also offers pike, barbel, and sea bass along the coast.
