VENICE HIDDEN PARADISE
Sea bass, Gilthead, Bluefish
Apr - Oct
Fly Fishing & Spinning
9ft, 6-8 WT
Fishing enthusiasts know it well: wherever there is water, their eyes instinctively follow the current, searching for fish and the slightest opportunity to pick up a rod and make a cast.
Venice, surrounded by water on all sides, evokes exactly the same feeling.
However, few people realize that Venice lies within a lagoon shaped by the mouths of several rivers from northern Italy. These river mouths have contributed to the creation of a unique and hybrid ecosystem, blending land and sea, where numerous species of birds and fish thrive.
It is within this extraordinary environment—characterized by reed beds, barene (salt marshes), and tidal inlets—that anglers can target a variety of fish on the fly or with spinning gear, including European sea bass, gilt-head bream, bluefish, leerfish, and occasionally even barracuda.
This is a truly unique experience, combining the centuries-old charm of Venice with one of the best saltwater fishing adventures in Italy.
Fishing Tecniques and Species in the Venice Lagoon
Fishing for European sea bass takes place in the inner lagoon, away from the open sea, along ghebi (small natural channels), near the edges of barene (salt marshes), or in the large saltwater lakes between navigable canals. Much like black bass, sea bass ambush their prey, hiding among seagrass beds or along natural drop-offs, camouflaged by the tidal currents.
The preferred technique here is fly fishing with streamers, using a 9-foot rod, #7/8 weight line to efficiently cast and manage small streamers or surface lures.
The European sea bass is the true queen of the lagoon, present in all sizes, from small juveniles of 15 cm to large breeding specimens exceeding 10 kg. Adding variety to the experience, the gilt-head bream is occasionally caught in these waters. The bluefish has become a permanent resident near the sea inlets, delivering powerful strikes and aggressive fights, particularly at sunset or under the moonlight, with specimens often exceeding 3 kg. One of the most thrilling predators to target is the leerfish, highly sought after from August to October. Ranging from 1 kg to over 15 kg, these powerful fish provide an exhilarating challenge, truly testing both skill and gear when hooked on large poppers or jerkbaits.
