Fly fishing Barcelona
Imagine boarding a bus from one of Europe's great cities and watching the landscape change as the suburbs fall away — the first forests, the valleys narrowing, snow-capped peaks appearing on the horizon. You are arriving at Vic and entering the Ter Valley.
The valley runs for nearly 50 kilometres from the pre-Pyrenean foothills to a dramatic wall of rock that closes it at the top and in that stretch, the river transforms entirely.
The lower Ter is wide and technical: deep glides, educated brown and rainbow trout holding in clear water, fishing that demands precision and patience. Further up, the valley narrows, the gradient steepens, and the Río Freser and surrounding mountain creeks take over — wilder, faster, and full of wild Mediterranean brown trout that rarely see a fly. Above the treeline, Pyrenean lakes hold native trout in a setting that bears no resemblance to the city you left behind 90 minutes ago.
From tight-line nymphing in the deep lower pools, to summer evening rises on the mid-valley riffles, to hunting wild Mediterranean trout on small dries in the upper tributaries as they tumble down from the Pyrenees, the Ter offers a complete fly fishing experience within a single valley.
Few destinations in Europe can match this range of environments and remain this accessible. Accessible, but not crowded. The Catalans have kept this particular Sunday escape very much to themselves.

Meeting point
Vic
Nestled in the foothills of the Pyrenees, Vic is a quiet Catalan town surrounded by rolling hills, forests, and crystal-clear rivers. Just over an hour from Barcelona, it’s the gateway to one of the most productive trout fishing areas in Spain, offering a perfect mix of natural beauty, authentic local charm, and world-class fly fishing.
Catches & Tecnique for Fly Fishing in Catalonia
The lower Ter holds wild brown trout (Salmo trutta) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), with fish regularly exceeding 50–60 cm in the trophy sections. The mountain creeks above Ripoll hold wild Mediterranean brown trout, smaller, beautifully marked, and entirely wild.
Euro nymphing is the primary technique on the main river: tight-line, high-stick, reading the drift through fast pockets and deeper seams where the biggest fish hold. The mid-valley riffles come alive with rising fish on summer evenings, rewarding a well-placed dry or emerger. Higher up, short-line nymphing and small dries fished in pursuit through tight mountain channels is the game.
A 10ft #3 is the ideal rod for all three environments: light enough for the delicate upper water, with enough reach for the tight-line work in the pools below.
