Fly fishing in Central Italy
The Santa Susanna is a spring that deserves international attention for its surrounding landscape, the size of the fish, and the extremely technical sight fishing it requires. But fortunately, it doesn't have that attention, and you will encounter few fishermen on this river, making your day a precious gift to yourself during your stay in Italy.
We'll start our day early, ready to tackle the river's clear and challenging waters, known for their selective brown trout and rare grayling. Armed with a 9ft 3wt rod, we'll use dry flies and nymphs to mimic the abundant mayflies and caddis, making precise casts to entice these elusive fish.
We'll navigate the 5 km stretch of fly-fishing-only water, enjoying the tranquility and beauty of this pristine environment. After a few hours of technical fishing, we'll take a break for a delicious meal accompanied by a glass of exquisite local red wine, all while soaking in the picturesque surroundings of the Lazio countryside.
In the afternoon, we'll explore new spots along the stream, continuing to refine our techniques and savor the thrill of the catch. With the best fishing times in March/April and from August to the season's end, this experience promises both challenge and reward in one of Italy's most exclusive fly fishing locations.

The Santa Susanna Chalk Stream is home to selective brown trout and the occasional rare grayling. We primarily use dry flies and nymphs, imitating the abundant mayflies and caddis present in the river.
The fishing season runs from the last Sunday of February to the first Sunday of October, with the best periods being March/April during the midday hatches and from August until the end of the season.
