WHEN TO GO

The fly fishing season in New Zealand

New Zealand's South Island season runs from October through April. The peak months are December through March, when water levels are stable, fish are active, and sight fishing conditions are at their best. January and February offer the longest days and most consistent weather for spotting and stalking fish.

More challenging

Season closed

More challenging: January and February bring low water, highly selective fish, and the highest angling pressure of the season. The fish have seen more flies and become harder to fool. Remote water help but this is when New Zealand tests even experienced anglers. The season closes entirely from May through September.

TARGET SPECIES

Brown, rainbow, marble trout and grayling

About fly fishing in New Zealand

New Zealand's South Island is not a destination for anglers who want to catch a lot of fish. It's a destination for anglers who want to catch one fish they'll never forget. The rivers here run clear over light gravel: you can see individual fish holding in pools from twenty meters away. The guides use elevated vantage points to spot fish, then position you for a single presentation. If the fly lands right, if the drift is clean, if the fish decides to eat, the take is visual and the fight is immediate. No indicator, no weight, no drift boat. Just you, the guide, and a large wild brown trout in some of the most remote water on earth. The South Island requires planning. Access to the best water often involves walking, sometimes hiking, occasionally helicopter. The fish are educated. The rewards are proportional.

The species you can catch

Wild brown trout are the primary target: fish that average 4 to 8 pounds, with larger fish common on the right rivers in the right season. Some South Island systems also hold rainbow trout. All fishing is sight fishing on dry fly or nymph, with single fish targeted individually.
