The fly fishing season in Slovenia
The Soča system fishes from March through November. May and June are the prime months on the river — hatches are prolific, marble trout are active on the surface, and water levels are ideal. September is excellent for larger fish moving into feeding mode before winter.
In early season (March/April) and late season (October/November) the lakes in the Soča basin become particularly productive for marble trout, with fish moving into accessible water before and after the summer river season.
Winter is its own season here. From October to February, Slovenia's larger rivers hold Hucho hucho, an apex predator that can pass a metre in length.

More challenging: Midsummer (Jul/Aug) brings warmer water and lower flows on the main river. The marble trout become more selective and move to deeper, cooler sections. Early morning sessions are significantly more productive than midday. March, April and November are great months for marble trout in the lakes. Hucho fishing in December, January and February is the hardest fishing we offer anywhere: cold, physical, and low-odds by nature.

Marble trout is the primary target: a species found almost nowhere else in the world, reaching sizes that surprise even experienced anglers. The Soča system also holds wild brown trout throughout and grayling in the slower sections. All fishing is catch-and-release on the main river and lakes.

What makes the marble trout special?
The marble trout is native to the Soča basin — one of the only places in the world where it exists in pure form. It's a large, wild fish that's selectively difficult to catch on the fly. For many anglers who chase it, it becomes one of the defining fishing experiences of their lives.
Is the Soča suitable for beginners?
The Soča is a technical river and the marble trout is a demanding fish. We recommend at least basic fly fishing experience. That said, our guides are skilled at adapting the day to different levels — there are sections of the river and target species (brown trout, grayling) that work well for less experienced anglers.
Can I combine Slovenia with other destinations?
Absolutely. Slovenia sits at the intersection of Italy, Austria, and Croatia. Many of our clients combine the Soča with a few days in the Dolomites or the Friulian rivers just across the Italian border. We can build a multi-destination itinerary around your European travel plans.
Is fishing on the Soča catch-and-release?
Yes. The main Soča river, its key tributaries, and the lakes are strictly catch-and-release for marble trout. This is both a legal requirement and a conservation commitment that our guides take seriously.
Do I need a fishing license for Slovenia?
Yes. Fishing in Slovenia requires a local daily or weekly license which varies by zone and river section. We include the license in every booking.
