WHEN TO GO

The fishing season in Mexico

The Caribbean flats fish from March through July, with May and June the peak for migratory tarpon. July remains excellent across most of the Quintana Roo coast. Late October through mid-December brings a strong second window: settled weather, fewer anglers, and permit still consistently on the flats. Holbox tarpon runs follow their own calendar. Baja California fishes best from spring through autumn, with roosterfish most active from June through October.

More challenging: August and September sit in the heart of hurricane season — weather unpredictable, winds strong, visibility poor. Early October can still be affected. July and late October through mid-December are excellent windows that many anglers overlook.

About fishing in Mexico

Mexico is one of the most diverse fly fishing countries in the world. The Caribbean coast, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Pacific each offer completely different fisheries — and between them they cover almost every species a saltwater angler could want.

On the Caribbean side, the flats of Quintana Roo hold permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook in numbers that make Mexico one of the very few places on earth where a saltwater super grand slam is a realistic ambition. Punta Allen and Ascension Bay are the names serious permit anglers know. Xcalak, on the southern tip of the peninsula, offers a quieter and equally exceptional alternative on the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef.

Further north, the waters around Holbox open up a different kind of fishing: whale sharks, giant tarpon in the passes, and a landscape that is as remote as anything in the Caribbean.

On the Pacific, Baja California brings roosterfish, yellowtail, dorado, and striped marlin into the portfolio. A completely different discipline, a completely different coast, and some of the most exciting light-tackle and fly fishing in the northern hemisphere.

The species you can catch

Permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook on the Caribbean flats. Migratory tarpon in the passes around Holbox. Roosterfish, yellowtail, dorado and striped marlin on the Pacific coast of Baja California.
