The fishing season in Mexico
The Caribbean flats fish from March through July, with May and June the peak for migratory tarpon. July remains excellent across most of the Quintana Roo coast. Late October through mid-December brings a strong second window: settled weather, fewer anglers, and permit still consistently on the flats. Holbox tarpon runs follow their own calendar. Baja California fishes best from spring through autumn, with roosterfish most active from June through October.

Is Mexico safe for fishing trips?
The areas where we operate — Quintana Roo, Baja California, and the Gulf coast — are well-established fishing destinations with a long history of international visitors. Punta Allen sits inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a protected area with minimal traffic and no through tourism. As with any destination, we brief every client on local conditions before travel and our partners are always the best point of contact on the ground.
Which airports do I fly into for fly fishing in Mexico?
For Quintana Roo and the Caribbean flats (Punta Allen, Xcalak, Holbox), the main gateway is Cancún International Airport (CUN), with direct flights from most major US cities. For Baja California, Los Cabos International Airport (SJD) is the closest entry point, well connected from the US West Coast.
Is there good fly fishing in Mexico?
Mexico is one of the best saltwater fly fishing destinations in the world. The Caribbean flats of Quintana Roo hold permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook in numbers that make a super grand slam a realistic target. Baja California offers roosterfish, dorado and striped marlin on the Pacific. Few countries offer this range of saltwater species within the same borders.
What is the best time of year to visit Mexico for fishing?
It depends on your target species. For permit and bonefish on the Caribbean flats, March through July and late October through mid-December are the prime windows. For migratory tarpon, May and June are exceptional. Baja California fishes best from spring through autumn, with roosterfish peaking from June through October.
Can beginners fly fish in Mexico?
The flats of Quintana Roo are technical water — permit in particular is one of the most demanding species in saltwater fly fishing. That said, bonefish are more forgiving and a good entry point for anglers new to saltwater. Our guides are experienced with all levels and will tailor the day to what makes sense for your casting ability and experience.
