There’s no signal worth checking when a trout is rising: the disconnection is complete, and it happens outdoors, in some of the most beautiful valleys in the world. Harvard’s Herbert Benson, who defined the relaxation response that meditation produces, calls fly fishing a beautiful way to evoke it: the repeated rhythm of the cast slows the mind the way a meditation practice does.
