Hucho fishing: snow, silence, and one chance.
Up before dawn. Boots in the snow, hands past feeling, hours of waiting for a spark, a flash, a chase, a shadow that turns and doesn't commit. Fishing for hucho (Hucho hucho), the Danube salmon, is one of the hardest and most frustrating pursuits in fly fishing. It is a fishery for very few, and the reward can be legendary.
The hucho is the apex predator of Slovenian rivers. Here it can pass a metre in length and reach fifteen kilos. It belongs in a serious angler's palmarès precisely because it is so difficult, in the same company as permit, Atlantic salmon and arapaima.
The season is winter and only winter, from October to February. The best moments come at the change of light: first thing at dawn, and again as the sun goes. Expect to walk through a metre of snow, to spend hours working the same run, and to be given perhaps two opportunities at the fish of your life.
Slovenia in winter is worth the trip on its own terms. Ljubljana's old town is at its best under snow and lights, thermal spas sit within easy reach of the rivers, and the food is serious: game, alpine cheeses, and the wines of Brda and Vipava.
Most days you will not touch a fish. That is the honest arithmetic of hucho fishing, and it is exactly why the ones that do come are talked about for years. The legend lies precisely in that.

Base camp
Bled
Bled in winter is a different town from the one on the postcards: the lake steams in the cold, the crowds are gone, and the island church sits in silence under the Karavanke. It is comfortable without being precious: good hotels, proper food, and a spa or two for the hours after the water.
Catches & Tecnique for Hucho fishing in Slovenia
Target species. Hucho (Hucho hucho), the Danube salmon: the apex predator of Slovenian rivers, and the single focus of the week. Fish over a metre and into double-figure kilos are the reason people come. They are also the reason most weeks end with one or two shots rather than a tally.
Spinning
Spinning is the most effective technique for this super-predator. It lets you cover every kind of water, from the smallest rivers to those with deep holes and heavy flow.
Rod: 9 ft (2.7 m), C.W. 50–100 g
Reel: sized to match the rod
Braid: 50 lb minimum breaking strain, 60 lb ideal
Lures: jointed wobblers 12–18 cm, silicone shads on jig heads 12–16 cm, or the classic sponge lures
Fly fishing
Fishing hucho on the fly is a fantastic experience, a challenge every angler should take on at least once. Many of the waters we fish are perfectly suited to it. The action allows both single-handed rods and switch rods. What matters is the power to turn over tube flies of more than 20 cm.
Rod: 9 ft #9 or 9 ft #10 single-hand, or a switch rod
Flies: tube flies over 20 cm
The fishing season and schedule
The season goes from October to February. Dawn and dusk are the windows. The day typically runs from an hour before sunrise until an hour after sunset, with a break in the middle of the day to eat and rest. The changes of light are the moments that matter, and we are on the water for both of them.
