Fly fishing Barcelona
One might imagine that western Catalonia is all dry plains and vineyards. Yet just an hour from Barcelona, the landscape opens into wide valleys and powerful rivers — a completely different Catalonia, where the wild heart of the region beats strongest.
Here, fly fishing takes place on larger, generous waters that hold an abundance of brown trout, often in great numbers and remarkable sizes. These rivers, fed by the Pyrenees and flowing through the province of Lleida, offer endless opportunities for both experienced anglers and those looking for a raw, authentic experience.
The surroundings tell the story of deep Catalan culture: stone villages, Roman bridges, and local taverns where time seems to stand still. The landscape is more arid and golden. The cuisine is rustic and hearty, pairing perfectly with a long fishing day — local wines, cured meats, and mountain cheeses that make you feel part of the land.
A series of weirs along the valley regulates the flow, keeping the river stable and fishable when the mountain rivers are blown out or closed. The Segre fishes through winter — one of the very few rivers in the region that does — and holds fish in good condition year-round. The season runs from spring through autumn with exceptional hatches in May and September, but a winter day on the Segre, with the valley to yourself and a heavy nymph in a deep pool, is an experience of its own kind.

Meeting point
Igualada
Igualada lies in the heart of Catalonia, surrounded by a golden rural landscape of rolling hills, olive groves, and vineyards that capture the essence of the Mediterranean countryside. The area still follows the timeless rhythm of Catalan rural life, dotted with stone farmhouses, historic villages, and deep-rooted traditions.
Catches & tecnique for Fly Fishing around Barcelona
Wild brown trout (Salmo trutta) are the primary target, fish regularly exceeding 55 cm, with occasional specimens well above 60 cm in the deeper pools. Euro nymphing worked through fast runs and into the dark water beneath undercut banks is the most consistent approach. In higher water, weighted streamers fished on the swing will move the largest, most territorial fish.
On calm mornings and evenings, selective dry fly fishing to rising trout is possible on the slower stretches — these fish inspect carefully and refuse often, and matching the hatch matters. A 10ft 4wt with a medium-fast action handles all three techniques comfortably; carry a range of tungsten-bead nymphs, a selection of streamers, and CDC emergers for the surface work.
