The Vall de Boí is one of the most spectacular valleys in the Pyrenees, located right next to Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, widely considered the most beautiful national park in Spain and among the most impressive in Europe.

Here, high-mountain streams alternate with crystal-clear Pyrenean lakes, but one thing is constant: wild, beautifully marked brown trout. You’ll target them primarily on dry flies, with occasional sight-nymphing opportunities, especially in the alpine lakes.

The surrounding area is dotted with Romanesque churches and lush green valleys. This itinerary offers a deep dive into local culture, between the history of Aragón and Catalonia, incredible food, and breathtaking mountain scenery that also invites hiking and horseback riding.

In short, this is an area that has something for the whole family, not just spectacular dry-fly fishing.

Fly Fishing in the Spanish Pyrenees

Dry fly fishing with light tackle is the dominant style here. A 7 ft #3 is ideal for the small, clear alpine creeks, paired with terrestrial patterns, ants, beetles, hoppers, falling from the grassy banks. During the more selective periods, CDC flies are extremely effective.

For higher-altitude lakes where longer casts are needed, a 9 ft #5 can be very useful.

The best periods are May and June, when temperatures rise, the snowmelt stabilises, and trout emerge from winter hungry and less selective. August typically brings heavy tourism and warmer water, and is generally less ideal for fishing.
The season picks up again in autumn, with its incredible orange colours, cooler temperatures, and excellent river levels, one of the most magical times to fish the valley.
