Fly Fishing in the French Riviera
Who would ever expect this? Just 45 minutes from Nice, from the Riviera coastline where the Roya River flows directly into the Mediterranean, a legendary valley opens up: dramatic, wild, and full of trout.
The Roya has a storied and turbulent history. Back in the 90s, it was one of the only places in the world where you could catch grayling just 50 meters from the sea. Then the waters warmed, the grayling disappeared, and wild brown trout took over in their place.
In October 2020, Storm Alex threatened to end the story altogether. In just five hours, rainfall equivalent to an entire year fell on the valley. Roman bridges were destroyed, roads washed away, the valley closed entirely for over a week. Of the thousands of trout that once populated the river, post-storm surveys found just 17 survivors. But this is where nature, with a little help from people, created something extraordinary. The local fishing federation collected trout from the lateral tributaries and reintroduced them to the Roya. Within five years, the population exploded. Today the Roya, just 45 minutes from Nice, its estuary opening directly onto the Côte d'Azur, is one of the reference rivers for fly fishing in France.
Wild brown trout, canyon walls, turquoise water that rivals the best Slovenian rivers, and strong activity on both nymph and dry fly. The Roya has returned to its former glory, and visiting it now feels like stepping back in time. It's no coincidence that the uppermost stretch of the valley is called the Vallée des Merveilles, but that's another story…

Meeting point
Breil-sur-Roya
A small village at the edge of the Mercantour National Park, sitting at the natural gateway to the best of the canyon water. It's where the valley's French and Italian souls meet, and a very good place to eat after a day on the river.
Catches & Technique for Fly Fishing on the French Riviera
The Roya fishes beautifully on the euro nymph, following the finest French tradition: long, light leaders and tungsten nymphs between 2.8 and 3.3 mm. But dry fly comes into its own during evening hatches or hunting sessions in summer. On the larger pools, sight fishing to big trout holding in the mid-current is very much on the table.
The setting is varied: deep canyon pools that you wade up through, open riffle sections, and pocket water where wild fish ambush from the shadows, fish with a characteristic dark coloration and bold red spots. Average size is around 30 cm, with genuine fario reaching up to 50 cm. Not many people would expect the French Riviera to offer fishing like this, but on the Roya, it really is exceptional.
