Euro nymph course in the French Pyrenees
This is a day of top-tier fly fishing. The last Fly Fishing World Championship took place in Ariège, and it's here, in these valleys, that French-style fly fishing got international recognition. The style of 12-foot rods, 9-meter leaders, and small nymphs with tungsten beads. A technical, extremely challenging form of fishing that, in recent years, has completely revolutionized the international fly fishing competition scene.
But it's not just a technical pursuit; it's also a successful method that allows you to approach wary, large, and highly selective fish by working the nymphs in a natural way.
This fishing day will be dedicated to learning the basics of French nymphing or improving your technique. Our guides have supported international teams during the World Championship, introducing them to the best techniques for these valleys, the most effective flies, and the prime spots.
But this won't be just a day of technique; it will also be a day of fishing on an incredible river, the Ariège, and its tributaries which flow through lush valleys and medieval villages. For us, it’s essential not only to have a successful day of fishing but also to enjoy a wonderful day on the river, as if we were locals.
Meeting point
Foix
Foix, a historic stronghold in the heart of the Pyrenees, is home to a formidable 12th-century castle that once guarded the region. Steeped in history, this ancient town invites you to explore its well-preserved medieval architecture, winding streets, and vibrant cultural heritage.
Catches & tecnique for fly fishing the Pyrenees
In these stretches of river, fish stocking is incredibly rare, and all the trout are completely wild. This makes them wary, strong, and challenging preys to catch.
The primary technique will be euro nymphing, with the best rods and flies provided by our guides. Typically, you'll use long 12-foot rods, 9-meter leaders, 0.12mm tippets, and two tungsten bead nymphs. This is the euro nymphing approach that is most effective here and what we aim to teach. It's a technique that can be useful on many other European rivers as well.
If conditions allow, there will also be opportunities for dry fly fishing. One thing is certain, though: you'll need to arm yourself with patience to tackle one of the most challenging and beautiful rivers in Europe.
