Fly Fishing

10ft, 8-9 WT

If fly fishing for sea bass is already a challenge, here we take it to the extreme: sight-fishing trophy Atlantic sea bass that leave the open ocean and push into Brittany’s vast estuaries to hunt crabs and baitfish.

This experience is less a classic day of fishing and more a true coastal hunt, built around long estuary walks, strategic positioning, reading tides, and playing with light and wind.

We can’t guarantee that you will hook a fish, but we guarantee you will experience something you won’t easily find anywhere else in Europe. Here in Brittany, sea bass are targeted like bonefish and permit: by wading, spotting them tailing in the algae, sliding out from rocks, or patrolling shallow channels in search of crabs.

Your mission is simple: cast your crab fly between algae patches or into a sandy pocket a few meters from the fish you’re watching, wait in complete stillness, and hope the bass decides to take it.

This is the game, and if you succeed, you’ll fool one of the most difficult fish in Europe.

Fly Fishing Sea Bass in Brittany

Brittany’s sea bass range from 40 cm up to 85 cm, some of the largest in Europe, and this region is among the very best places on the continent to target them on the fly. The population is healthy, tides are strong, and the Atlantic environment gives them easy access to their favourite prey: crabs.

You’ll fish with crab imitations similar to permit flies, long leaders, and floating lines. A 9–10 ft 8 wt rod is the best choice to cast these heavier flies while keeping presentations delicate.

The season runs from May to November, with early and late months offering more selective fish and fewer tourists, and mid-summer usually providing the highest activity.
