WHEN TO GO

The fly fishing season in Italy

The Italian season generally runs from March to October, with the exact dates set region by region. Spring snowmelt and high summer heat make some months trickier on the lowland rivers, while the high alpine creeks fish beautifully through the warm months. Aim for the prime windows and you will find ideal water and rising fish.

More challenging: in mid-summer (Jul–Aug) warmer water and lower flows make the lowland and spring-creek fishing harder, but the high-altitude Dolomite and Alpine creeks stay cool and productive. Most rivers close from November.
